Blackwater Outdoor Experiences, in collaboration with Northstar Academy, is offering a group experience for adolescent young woman beginning March 6, 2008. The 8-week program will focus on strengthening the critical competencies and skills young woman need in order to successfully master the transition to adulthood. The program is intended for young woman 13-17 years old who experience challenges due to learning disabilities, ADHD, emotional challenges, or simply could use extra developmental support.
Our strength-based, prescriptive program is designed to build a new understanding of self and the challenges of growing towards adulthood through activities that challenge through skill-building, success-oriented experiences and group processing. Self-exploration, self-advocacy and teamwork will be accomplished through a sequence of prescriptive activities that include traditional talk-based therapies, adventure-based counseling initiatives and expressive arts activities. This program is designed to be fun, challenging and to build lasting, supportive relationships among its participants. Participants will engage in a variety of activities including adventure-based counseling, arts, music & drama, as well as traditional group therapy activities.
This experience is intended to assist young women:
- Develop a sense of competence and confidence
- Develop and maintain satisfactory peer relationships
- Establish independence through responsible decision-making
- Establish a healthy body image
- Communicate and stay connected with family
- Understand sexuality/refusal skills
- Develop self advocacy/protection skills
