PROGRAM DIRECTOR

Matthew D. Weneta, MEd

Matthew brings over ten years of experience working in therapeutic settings with multiple populations.  He has taught academics and facilitated experiential therapies for hospitals, psycho-educational centers, public schools, and therapeutic summer camps dating back to 1993.  His background includes twelve years of facilitating and developing therapeutic ropes course programming and social skills curriculum for exceptional populations.  He holds a Bachelors of Science in Special Education from Georgia Southwestern State University and a Masters of Education in Camp Administration from the University of Georgia.  He holds current teaching licensure and recently completed the E.G.A.L.A. Equine Facilitated Psychotherapy and Learning certificate.

Matthews’s wilderness experience begun in the late 70’s as a Cub Scout and Boy Scout, and as a child was a “camp rat.”  He is an enthusiastic outdoorsman having hiked, paddled, rock climbed, fished, and scuba dived on three continents.  He is quite proud of having swum in the four oceans.  Matthew is an avid soccer fan, coach and player having been an award winning high school soccer coach, college player, as well as a volunteer youth coach.

Matthew believes a well-contrived outdoor or adventure experience provides opportunity for exploration of the infinite possibilities of nature, the learning and testing of specific skills such as knot tying, cooking, and climbing, as well, and most importantly offers an environment for quiet contemplation, self exploration and personal development.  The naturally occurring consequences and metaphors that occur in the wilderness make a significant impact on those who interact with wilderness.  He has witnessed first hand how participation in the adventure-experience can be, and often is, intrinsically motivating.  Through the enjoyment of play and exploration that take place in the wilderness, barriers are broken down and solid foundations can be built.
